The Shop

The shop, now in it's third generation was founded in 1908 by Hugh Law, who, having learned his trade under the guidance of Swiss and German tutors gained a certificate in watchmaking and jewellery.

The first premises for H.F Law Jewellers in Newcastle was located on the main street, currently the home of the leather shop. In 1934 the shop moved premises and a second generation of Law's joinned the family business. Hugh's son Cecil Law began learning the trade as soon as he left school and is still actively involved in the business today, some 65 years later. The move to new premises in 1934 took H.F Law Jewellers to 29 Central Promenade where the business remained for almost 50 years.

Changing business trends in Newcastle prompted a further move for the shop in 1981. Inspired by the increasing concentration of business at the North end of the town, HF Law relocated at the Shopping Centre on Main Street and the shop has remained there since.

In 1975 Cecil's son Peter became the third generation of Law's to become part of the family business. Peter brought with him a very detailed knowledge of watching, establishing him as the most qualified man in this field in Ireland. Peter is confident that the family firm will continue to be a part of the commercial heart of Newcastle for many years to come.
